Registered Counselling - Adoption

Adoption is a significant legal process in which the legal rights and responsibilities for a child are transferred from the child’s parent(s) to the adoptive parent(s). Given the seriousness and permanence of this change, the Adoption Regulation 2015 (NSW) requires that any person or child providing consent to an adoption participate in registered counselling. This may include a young person aged 12 or over consenting to their own adoption, an adult consenting to their own adoption or a parent consenting to the adoption of their child.

Registered adoption counselling is provided in a professional, ethical and supportive manner, ensuring that all parties fully understand the legal and emotional implications of adoption. Counselling is conducted in a respectful and approachable way, with information explained clearly and at an appropriate pace, allowing individuals to make informed and considered decisions.

The counselling process is carefully structured to meet all legal requirements. All required consent forms are provided and explained in plain language in accordance with legislative standards, ensuring the process is thorough, transparent and legally compliant.

This approach supports informed consent and promotes outcomes that prioritise the best interests wellbeing of children and young people.
